Just 5 good blogs
2 old favorites and 3 new goodies...

Although I don't use blogging software, and I certainly don't post every day, I have turned my site into one of those dreaded blogs (quite awhile ago, in fact)—to document added pages, if anything else. Lately, I've been trying to post every day (we'll see how long that lasts, and it's occurred to me I could list some of my favorite blogs, another traditional thing to do.

An interview with Geoff Nunberg on NPR led me to Languagelog, which I've mentioned before, but still faithfully check every morning with my tea. The posters, linguists, range over any number of topics, from Bill Clinton's diary, Marge Simpson's vocalizations, to the way bus routes on a campus are labeled (much more complicated than you might think), not to mention deep-seeding the eggcorn: it's sort of like Science News, with a linguistic slant and great fun.

Blogs link to other blogs, and Languagelog led me to Respectful of Otters which has the distinction of being my favorite political blog for a number of reasons: it's cute, it's clever, and it's funny—though the design is simple, it's one of most attractive blogs I've seen, besides making immediately clear what its focus is; perhaps most important is its author sticks to her areas of expertise, and backs up her assertions by reading primary souce material, and finally, who could resist this tagline: “‘Psychologists have a duty to be fair and respectful of otters.” - noble charge from a student paper.’

Alas, Respectful has only come back after a several month hiatus, (and possibly could be heading for another hiatus) so I checked out some other blogs—too many to count, but another I liked, again because it seemed to reference primary souce material—and nice design, even cartoons drawn by its creator, Amptoon's Alas, a Blog. But if it's the art, rather than the politics, that attract you, check out this wonderful art/illustration/comics blog, Drawn, every day eaturing several new links to cool arty sites.

I wish there was something like this for the bead/fiber/adornment world...and maybe there is, but I just haven't found it yet. In the meantime, the closest thing I know to a bead blog would be my friend Melanie Brooks Lucacs’ blog, part of her newly updated website. Very sharp, and lots of info from a wonderful ceramicist, beadmaker and businesswoman.

I suppose finding luscious bead and fiber blogs and/or sites might be a good way to keep up with the post every day. Except then maybe I wouldn't have time to make luscious bead and fiber stuff. Sigh:)
