In with the New,
symbolized by the Old

Today's giftwrap, a bonus for the 2023 winter holiday giftwrap series, came about because I virtuously ordered the gift from the publisher rather than the evil Amazon, and it took the full 7 business days (mebbe more) to show up.[1] I got around this by wrapping a jar with one luxardo cherry left in it[2] & a promissory note—the brightly coloured gift featured last time.

(reused) fish skeleton paper, mesh and wire-edged ribbon, paper twist and raffia ribbon, brown crinkle paper, silk flowers, plastic round ornaments, hot glue and tape; wrapped and photographed 5jan24, sony ILCE-7C, sony 90mm macro, f/2.8, ev 0, 1/160s, ISO 100, WB, daylight; cropped and scaled in gimp.

The recipient happened to admire the fish skeleton paper (one of the attic items courtesy of Page—along with the ornaments) the first time it showed up so I chose it for this gift. It had a hole where the original decorations had gotten torn off, so I just filled that with a scrap of brown paper, and centered the intersection of the two mesh ribbons (an effect I really liked) on top of that.

Another view of the (reused) fish skeleton paper, mesh and wire-edged ribbon, paper twist and raffia ribbon, brown crinkle paper, silk flowers, plastic round ornaments, hot glue and tape; wrapped and photographed 5jan24, sony ILCE-7C, sony 90mm macro, f/2.8, ev 0, 1/160s, ISO 100, WB, daylight; cropped in gimp.

The recipient happens to like, in addition to animal skeletons, bronze/olive/pink colour schemes. I could've pushed the pink more with some curling ribbon, but I wanted to emphasize the matte, natural look, so I just stayed with the raffia and paper accents instead (albeit with tiny shreds of yellow curling and narrow red ribbon which were leftovers imperfectly removed and used to tie things together respectively to add just the tiniest bit of poison).

Honestly, I finished wrapping and then photographing this just in time for it to get unwrapped. This is what happens when one gets last-minute gifts, but I was happy nonetheless.

[1]This is not only a bonus page, but a bonus gift: I happened to read an obit in the NYT & realized the author's seminal book would be perfect, so, after confirming that it wasn't already in the recipient's library, I ordered it immediately.

[2]I actually prefer the cheaper Costco alternative that's redder and tarter than the real thing, but not this recipient—so I figured they'd like the last one: they did, but because of a quite-unintended-on-my-part gag quality...I only carry off joke gifts by accident, I guess.
